Employee Accused of Looting Bosses Home

More than $75,000 worth of jewelry, tools and cash was stolen from a Pompano Beach man’s home by one of his employees while he was away on vacation.

According to an article in the Sun Sentinel, Jon Skorey, who owns a successful flooring business, took a month off work to vacation as his cabin up north and allowed an employee, Lawrence Kaehler, to stay at his home. Kaehler had been an employee of Skorey’s for about eight years and most recently worked as a project manager for large-scale industrial jobs. He typically would drive down from his central Florida home and stay in motels when working on long-term projects.

Kaehler began pawning items beginning September 30 through November 4 when Skorey returned. When Skorey confronted Kaehler, Kaehler handed Skorey receipts from the pawn shops and returned some of the items he hadn’t yet pawned. The stolen items included bracelets, rings and power tools.

Kaehler faces charges including grand theft and dealing in stolen property. The penalties for property crimes in Florida range in severity depending on the amount of property stolen, whether anyone was injured or whether a weapon was involved. The accused may be facing probation, hefty fines or lengthy prison sentences.
