Group Charged with Id Theft, Tax Fraud

A group of Lauderhill residents are facing federal prison time after partaking in an identity theft and tax fraud scheme.

Seven people used personal identification information that was stolen from patients’ files in a medical office where one member of the group worked. They then submitted $137,000 in fraudulent tax refund claims and spent more than $49,000 before they were found out.

Five of the seven suspects have been sent to federal prison, and received probation and were ordered to forfeit any remaining funds and to pay restitution. One member of the group is awaiting sentencing, and the last member is a fugitive.
