DUI Checkpoint In Deerfield Beach

The Broward Sheriff's Office and other law enforcement agencies will be staging a DUI checkpoint to look for impaired motorists in Deerfield Beach. The checkpoint will be at 380 S. Federal Highway from 9 p.m. on Friday until 5 a.m. on Saturday.

DUI checkpoints are legal and are used in order to improve highway safety due to the problem of drunk driving. Police must follow a process when stopping cars to check for drunk drivers. They also must be able to support their stops with facts that would lead a reasonable officer to conclude that the person driving the car was actually impaired. Basically, the police officers must have probable cause to stop a car, just as they would while stopping any car on the road.

It is not required that police announce that they intend to conduct a DUI checkpoint, however they often do in hopes that it will act as a deterrent.
