Derek Medina of South Miami was an avid user of social media. His leisure time was extensively documented on You-Tube, his Facebook page full of photos of his tattoos, meals, trips and poolside drinks with his wife. However, on Thursday, August 8, he posted a photo of his wife, Jennifer Alfonso, after he had shot and killed her. The post then went viral.
Alfonso’s ten-year-old daughter from a previous relationship was in the house at the time of the killing but was unharmed. Medina is likely to claim self-defense, eve though he admitted in a police report that he had gotten into an argument with Alfonso before getting his gun. Alfonso said she was leaving Medina, then he followed her into the kitchen, still brandishing his weapon, where she grabbed a knife.
According to an article in the Miami Herald, a former employer of Alfonso described Medina as a jealous man who had hit Alfonso in the past. Medina and Alfonso, married in 2010, had divorced in early 2012 but remarried a few months later. A friend recalled that during on of their break-ups, Medina had posted angry and negative things about Alfonso on his Facebook page. His posting of Alfonso’s killing was shared by more than 100 people before Facebook shut down the account.
