On Friday, a man in Riviera Beach attempted to steal items from a car parked in a convenience store parking lot. Little did he know, the car had been placed there by police and was equipped with a system that sprays SmartWater CSI Technology liquid, a substance that is invisible to the naked eye, but shows up under ultraviolet light.

The suspect was sprayed with the water when stealing from the car and police caught him ten seconds later and were able to identify him as the same person from the burglary with a ultraviolet light. The man was jailed on burglary and grand theft charges.

Police say this is the department’s first successful arrest with the water technology, which they began using on June 27.
